The Cyrus Integrated 8 vs2 amplifier is the latest development of our internationally-acclaimed Cyrus integrated amplifier family. Given a top quality source, the Cyrus Integrated 8 vs2 will paint a truly three dimensional, acoustic picture, with stunningly focused staging of acoustic images. Over the last twenty years, Cyrus has learned to tune each element of the musical range accurately, so that today, the new Cyrus Integrated 8 vs2 is able to faithfully recreate the subtle balance between length of single notes and tonal accuracy.

The new Cyrus integrated 8 vs2 gives a precise sense of timing and rhythm, upon which much of music's magic is based. Accurate interplay between musicians is based upon subliminal information, and capturing this information is absolutely vital to the overall success of a hi-fi system. It is this ability of Cyrus to finely balance circuitry throughout our systems that makes our components sing. The Cyrus Integrated 8 vs2 is, we believe, a significant step forward in integrated amplifier design and will form a valuable and long-lasting cornerstone for your system. In the summer of 2005, we began a year long project to totally re-engineer our amplifiers, including component upgrades and our latest vs 2 preamp technology. This was an exciting project, running alongside new EU legislation relating to materials used within consumer electronics. This gave us the opportunity to include many improvements in our tooling and production processes.

How we achieved this advance:

It is surprising that after twelve years of continuous development our integrated amplifier designs can continue to improve, but they do! Like all fine quality products, our components are the result of many years of incremental advances in knowledge and technology.

The new RoHS legislation has brought about a new generation of environmentally-friendly electronic components, and we have reinvested in totally revised tooling, PCB design and manufacturing process technology. By investing in these exciting new components, we have included a wide range of acoustically desirable advances in materials and components. The result is better sounding Cyrus systems and a much smaller environmental impact. Quick to say, but in actuality, this involves over ten man years of research and development and hundreds of thousands of pounds investment from Cyrus Audio.

Our experience of the effect on audio signals from metals is well documented. For instance, our monolithic chassis is made from an alloy of magnesium and aluminium chosen for its beneficial acoustic properties when in close proximity to low level audio signals. Similarly, our investigations into PCB and tracking materials are extensive and, together, this has resulted in the careful selection of materials we choose to provide valuable acoustic advances in our products.

As a happy bonus of the work we have completed to achieve RoHS compliance (a massive investment in tooling and electronic engineering), we have implemented a wide number of improvements that would have individually been unaffordable. As we have relayed circuit boards and made investments in new production processes, we have been able to apply a broad range of valuable advances into this new version of our Cyrus 8. This new model is called the Cyrus Integrated 8 vs2 and, although it only gains a ‘2’, the work completed and the resulting benefit belay this simple suffix.

In the Cyrus Integrated 8 vs2, particular attention has been paid to every single signal processing component within the preamplifier stage. This has been a massive job, as we have moved the entire component count to RoHS compliant components. Both active and passive components were selected without budgetary compromise and, through exhaustive listening tests, we have been able to deliver an unprecedented level of transparency to the sound. The same scrutiny has been applied to the selection of components in the pre-out signal path, essential where the Cyrus Integrated 8 vs2 is included in a bi-amplified system. Competent audio engineers will immediately recognise the quality that has been invested ‘under the hood’ of this amplifier.

High output power - The Cyrus Integrated 8 vs2 delivers the most power yet from our chassis. Despite the power amplifier delivering a true 70W+70W RMS power into 8 ohms, no compromises have been made elsewhere in the amplifier. True to the Cyrus tradition, the chassis also houses a traditionally designed power supply featuring an oversize 330VA power transformer and extra-large electrolytic reservoir capacitors. Dual charge pumps and linear post-regulators increase the voltage and stabilise the power supply available for the voltage amplifier stage. This eliminates any trace of power supply ripple and noise, with no sag under load. The extra headroom that this provides, swings the current amplifier further towards its rails, giving a full 70W 8 ohm performance.

PSX-R applied to the preamp – The Cyrus Integrated 8 vs2 features an unusual strategy for PSX-R upgradeability, with the ultra-smooth, battery-like DC power of the PSX-R applied directly and only to the pre-amplifier stage through a solid-state switch. The internal power supply is then reserved entirely for the power amplifier. The total separation of power sources moves the system topology much closer to a separate two box, pre-power combination, when used with a PSX-R. A secondary benefit of this arrangement is Plug ’n’ Play PSX-R connection, with no requirement for internal modification when a PSX-R upgrade is added to the system.

Power supply advances – Our designers still unanimously endorse our traditional ‘no-compromise’ approach to power supplies, engineering a high capacity linear power supply built from quality components, with linear regulation for the sensitive preamplifier circuitry. The Cyrus Integrated 8 vs2 takes this design policy to an unprecedented level to achieve the sonic and technical performance that is expected from a new generation of Cyrus amplifier.

Higher current output stage - When driving real music into a true loudspeaker load, massive currents are demanded from a power amplifier stage. For the Cyrus Integrated 8 vs2, our designers have effectively doubled the peak current capability of the power amplifier and halved its output impedance, thus enabling a far greater transfer of energy from the power supply into difficult speaker loads.

Advanced peripheral circuitry for soft standby switching - Electronic standby switching has always been a feature in Cyrus amplifiers. Electronic switching completely avoids the problems of contact degradation that occur in the speaker relays used in most other manufacturers designs. As these amplifiers age, the relay contacts degrade and contact non-linearity gradually rises, degrading the sound. The Cyrus electronic system works by effectively ‘tri-stating’ the power amplifier to prevent it from delivering any current to the loudspeaker whilst set to standby, completely avoiding the need for a relay in the signal path. Secondary benefits are instantaneous disconnection of the power amplifier from the load if an external fault condition, such as a speaker short-circuit, are detected by the control system. In the latest revision of this system for the Cyrus Integrated 8 vs2, a more sophisticated control circuit soft switches the power amplifier silently between standby and operational modes.

Advanced thermal management – Special thermal measurement techniques are employed by the computer control system of the Cyrus Integrated 8 vs2 to intelligently control the outer skin temperature of the casting, maximising the thermal performance available to the amplifier in any environment.
