Afie Jurvanen (who records under the name the Bahamas) is a Finnish-Canadian from Barrie (Ontario) This track is great to listen to on a system with good soundstaging. The opening guitar pans left to right and the vocal comes in absolute contrast, completely locked dead centre. The track is simple in its construction, but subtlety complex in the way it leads you in.
You could be forgiven for thinking this is a 2018 take on UK northern soul, but in fact it’s US southern soul. Nathaniel Rateliff hails from Denver and he and his band the Night Sweats are signed to the Memphis Stax label (Otis Reading, Booker T. & the M.G.’s) Shoe Boot is the opening track on their Tearing at the Seams album. The recording quality is not the highest, but it has a great raw emotional drive to it. Right from the first resolving chord brass intro, it has you hooked.
Till Bronner is a Famous German Jazz Trumpeter, and this latest album was released in Jan 2018. A really well recorded track, it features some beautifully textured soft trumpet. Bronner is “young” for a Jazz Musician at 46, but his bassist needs to go on fitness regime, as you can hear how out of breath he gets.
