The FM X supercedes the established FM7.5 to set new standards of performance as Cyrus’ flagship radio tuner. With the analogue FM band continuing to offer the best resolution as a radio source, the FM X builds on the core technologies of the FM7.5, featuring many circuit enhancements over it’s predecessor. When coupled to a quality FM aerial, the FM X brings the listener closer still to the performance, conveying faithfully the realism and immediacy of broadcast material as only high quality radio can.
The FM X features PSX-R connection for the first time in a Cyrus FM tuner. A short demonstration of the enhancement that connection of a PSX-R brings to the sonic performance of the FM X is all that will be necessary to confirm the PSX-R as a ‘must-have’ upgrade for the FM X owner.
The triple stage IF strip of the Cyrus FM X is a highly linear design which is optimised to deliver a low distortion characteristic. New techniques using additional storage space available within the calibration memory of the FM X enable the compensation of more component variables during factory alignment. This results in even more accurate circuit alignment, driving undesirable distortion artefacts down still further.
Upgrades including power supply revisions, new output buffers and re-alignment of the output filter stage bring greater resolution and soundstage improvements to the FM X.
The sensitive, low distortion front-end design of the FM X now features enhanced performance with higher levels of RF signal strength. This translates to greater headroom and lower distortion when used in areas where signal strength is very high.
Close tolerance quartz crystal together with a precision phase-locked-loop (PLL) circuitry is designed to enable stable and accurate tuning to the radio station. The centre frequency adjustment of the tuning system is achieved by computer controlled calibration during the manufacturing phase of the FM X through the MC-BUS.
The instrument level accuracy of the FM X clearly shows up deficiencies in the absolute centre frequency of some commercial radio station and cable transmissions. The FM X is designed to deal with this by fine-tuning stations in steps of 10kHz. This totally compensates for any error of absolute nature in the transmission carrier frequency and may of course be memorised by the unit in a preset.
The output filtering of the FM X is achieved through a high performance passive filter network. This scheme ensures effective rejection of the pilot tone and the sub-band frequencies. This largely accounts for the very natural reproduction quality of this product.
The precision die-cast enclosure of Cyrus FM X has a myriad of advantages both electrically and mechanically. The non-resonant nature of the alloy minimises microphonic effects, while its non-ferrous composition provides an effective shield from external electro-magnetic disturbances. This also eliminates coupling of the power transformer stray magnetic fields to the sensitive audio circuitry.
